The history of
James River Equipment dates back to the 1920's and Holly, Colorado. Rudolph Romer, great grandfather of Mark Romer, the president of James River Equipment, opened a John Deere dealership there in 1926. The dealership prospered in spite of the depression, largely due to the people and their commitment to the customers. The foundation of offering quality products and supporting them with exceptional customer service expanded eastward in 1977 when the Romer family purchased a dealership in Virginia and, hence, James River Equipment was born.
Under the leadership of Mark Romer, James River Equipment is 25 locations strong and growing to support the equipment needs of our customers across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Mark continually ingrains his philosophy that "It is ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE and ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS!" This core culture has allowed James River Equipment to continue to expand and to spur our success over the past 30 years serving as your construction and forestry as well as your farm tractor & implements and commercial & consumer equipment dealer. In addition to John Deere products, the company also sells complimentary brands that include Hitachi, Wirtgen, Sakai, Finn, Morbark, and Stihl.
The people working at James River Equipment are what make the business successful. Rather than take a "big box retailer" approach and decide inventory for each store at a corporate office, the individual locations control inventory to meet the needs of the surrounding community. Parts and service are handled the same way; 'What do our customers need?'
The result is a growing business that has been recognized with the John Deere Partners in Excellence Award four years running. Only two other dealers have won this award four consecutive years, and one of them is the Romer business in Colorado. The growth in sales, rentals, parts and service is a direct reflection on our loyal customers.

HOME OFFICE – ASHLAND, VA
The home office is located off I-95 at the Atlee/Elmont exit. Most people who travel north up I-95 cannot miss the hillside of tractors and construction machines. Every once in a while you will even catch a glimpse of a riding lawn mower resting high above the ground in the bed of a 40-ton articulating dump truck or in the bucket of a wheel loader. The hillside grabbed the interest of a mom’s play-group enough for them to call and schedule a play date to “touch a tractor”. It was unusual for 4 mini-vans filled with four-year-olds to visit our store, but we welcomed the very excited group.
